How it works

iConvert™ is a ‘plug-and-play’ microgrid in a container. It integrates: 

  • Renewable energy generation (such as solar, wind, tidal, hydrogen). 
  • Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) for storing and releasing energy on demand. 
  • Advanced Energy Management Software (EMS or EMOS) to optimise power flow and maximise efficiency. 

It enables charging and discharging to your plants’ requirements, releasing stored energy during peak demand/high energy cost, whilst storing energy during low-cost periods.

It can operate connected to the utility grid or in independent “island” mode, giving you complete control over how energy is generated, stored and consumed. 

It can be used for your plant, your EV charging facility, your vessels (for Marine) … or for all: the possibilities for your business are endless.

Smart Shore Power

In partnership with CEMEX UK and WMG, iconsys delivered the UK’s first microgrid solution for a Shore Power application. The system combines solar PV, battery storage and advanced energy management to support CEMEX’s ambitious decarbonisation targets — a 47% CO₂ reduction by 2030 and net zero by 2050. The solution powers both site operations and vessel when in dock.

Offshore Power Buoy

Working with PD&MS and Maersk Supply Service, iconsys contributed to the world’s first full-scale offshore power buoy. Using iConvert™, the buoy supplies vessels with clean offshore wind energy while moored, reducing idle emissions and noise pollution. Scalable to hybrid-electric SOVs and beyond, it’s a pioneering step in maritime decarbonisation.

Our initial grid-tied solutions generating power from renewables began over a decade ago when we provided a grid-tied hydro power drive solution using an Archimedes Screw, to generate electricity from the movement of water. The initial design was a system with 10% inefficiency – our unique drive solution provided enhanced efficiency to improve the ROI, reducing the inefficiency to 5%

“I own and operate the first hydropower system on an Environment Agency asset in the country, a twin set of Archimedes screw turbines powering Windsor Castle.

I was told by everyone I asked, that it was not possible to create a hybrid hydropower system that could, when conditions allow, run in a more efficient direct drive state.

Let’s get technical 

For those who want the detail, iConvert™ integrates a suite of advanced hardware and software to ensure safe, efficient and compliant operation. A full turnkey solution could include: 

  • Generation Sources

    • Renewable energy (solar panels, wind turbines, tidal or hydro units). 
    • Conventional generation (diesel or gas gensets, CHP units). 
  • Energy Storage

    • Typically batteries (BESS) but can also include flywheels, hydrogen, or thermal storage. 
    • Provides stability, backup power, and load balancing. 
  • Power Conversion System (PCS)

    • Converts and conditions electricity (AC/DC, voltage, frequency) so that all sources, storage, and loads work seamlessly together. 
  • Loads (End Users)

    • The systems, buildings, or equipment consuming the electricity (industrial machinery, port facilities, vessels, offices, etc.). 
  • Control & Energy Management System (EMS/EMOS)

    • The “brain” of the microgrid, coordinating generation, storage, and consumption.
