iconsys engineers achieve TÜV SÜD Process Functional Safety Engineer certification (IEC 61511)

21/07/2026

Two of our lead engineers, Andrew Stainton and Stephen Roberts, have achieved Process Functional Safety Engineer certification with TÜV SÜD.

This adds to our growing team of TÜV-certified engineers, giving us a combined process and machinery safety capability delivered by a single integrated in-house team, rather than customers needing to coordinate multiple specialist engagements across separate providers.

As automation systems become increasingly complex, functional safety plays an ever more critical role in ensuring they operate reliably and safely. Embedding robust safety engineering practices helps us minimise risk, protect people as well as assets and build confidence in the solutions we deliver.

What the certification involves

The TÜV SÜD Process Functional Safety Engineer award is gained through the IEC 61511 Functional Safety Certification Programme, covering the full safety lifecycle including verification, validation, functional safety assessments and audits. This is followed by a formal examination. It’s recognised as an essential qualification for engineers working across the Functional Safety lifecycle in the process and power industries, giving customers independently verified assurance of the competence behind their safety programmes.

Supporting our customers and our growth

As we continue to broaden our offering into new applications and sectors, recognised functional safety expertise is central to meeting the stringent requirements of process industries and safety-critical environments. Growing our pool of certified engineers is a key part of how we support growth, innovation and customer trust across every market we operate in.

For customers managing safety assessments, gap remediation or compliance programmes across complex plants and sites, it means a genuinely integrated capability rather than multiple specialist engagements.

If you’re working through HAZOP outcomes, SIL verification, safety instrumented system design, or need independent assessment, we’d welcome a conversation.
